SUN SAFETY AND VITAMIN D

Yes I know we have had 2 rotten summers, but 2010 is forecast to be a good one. Honestly!

Recent research is showing how important it is to get safe sun. One of the reasons for this is that we are all becoming vitamin D deficient and the best and only way to get enough is from the sun. Some foods are fortified with vitamin D, but the most effective way is to get 20-30 minutes of sun shine on face and arms around late morning or lunch time. This is of course the opposite of guidlines from the DOH and cancer research bodies.

Vitamin D has been linked to cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease and much more with new discoveries most weeks. Ricketts has returned and cancers like prostate and breast and colon have been linked to Vitamin D deficiency.

Other precautions to take include keeping hydrated by drinking lots of water based drinks and avoiding alcohol in the sun

Sunscreen is still important and should be used for any extended periods in the sun along with a good protective sunhat (especially in children). However it is now thought that too much protection is also blocking the necessary UV rays for the production of vitamin D.

So do enjoy the summer, get lots of fresh air and exercise, eat fresh foods and drink plenty of water.

All this can help your immune system to build up it's reserves for the winter.
